The Shoshone Mountain Range is about 6 miles wide and 66 miles long making it one of the longest mountain ranges in the state of Nevada. This ghost town of Grantsville sits nestled in the Shoshone Range which makes up for about a 400 square mile radius. On our way heading into the town we see antelope running across the basin towards the Shoshone range this is the wild west!
If you pay very close attention I actually drive right through the ghost town of Grantsville and continue to head up into the Shoneshone Mountain Range. Its very vast here and roads like you see in this clip were once used by pioneers and their wagons as they came to Grantsville to build an empire.You can see that this area beyond the town site is rather forested and a fairly harsh wilderness.

One of the first foundations we discovered was ruins of probably a miners cabin. They would build the cabins out of native stone then put a tin or metal roof on it and call it home. The further you go down into the valley the more foundations you will find. Just remember that this town had saloons, stores, school, stables and even a fine restaurant. Today those foundations are all that is left of such sites.
Downtown is full of surprises such as many stone foundations but also some structures that are still entirely in tact. While other sites you might find are an old safe buried in the mud or broken glass bottles from the saloon.

These large debris piles you see often were brought from within the mountain then dumped over the edge of the mine. As more ore was brought up and mining took place the bigger the debris pile where they would build ox roads on which carried ore or dropped down into the Alexander Processing Mill.
The roof is made of timber and the walls of native stoned mortored together to withstand over 100 years of the elements. This home now serves as the lions den as we find a jaw bone with and a badly torn up hip. It is obvious from these finds that predators lurk within the Shoshone Mountains the same ones the pioneers would have to deal with in the 1800's.

I was not aware this was the school till after I did further research on the town of Grantsville. Although their was not that many children who resided in the town the ones that did huddled in front of the fireplace on a cool winters day. Today this school tells an entirely different tale one used by lizards who have today called it home for the past 100 years.
The Union Mining District was this towns only mining district and most of it took place in this narrow canyon you see in the clip. Prior to it being a part of the Grantsville Mine a later boom brought in by the Alexander Company mined the Brooklyn, Silver Palace, Great Eastern and Alexander Mines. Much of what remains are water tanks, ore chutes and remnants of the mill nearby that processed the ore.

These are a few of the clips taken deep inside the Alexander Mine which is massive inside with rooms big enough to hold a couple mini vans and tunnels that lead in all sorts of directions. There are many shafts that go down into the depths of the mine just as their are old rickety ladders that go up into the mountain. If you pay very close attention their is a clip within the video that shows the mines old ore cart tracks.
This is the grand tour of the Alexander Mill which resides in front of its massive mine. Not much remains of its former glory just a mere shell with a set of ore chutes and even an old well along with a small little ore processing house which overshadows the mill below. At one time over 20 stamps located on the property crushed the ore as it would come down into this small structure on top then make its way over to the stamps which crushed the ore so that it could be processed for its rich gold and silver. This is Grantsville's greatest treasures! It also was the site that a criminal was lynched from its very wood beams for a crime committed.
