Grantsville Nevada

Sue and I would head out here very early in the morning I wanted us to get there explore the town and get back before nightfall. We had so many places on our list to do it was necessary to take each place one day at a time and well Grantsville is quite the drive. It is easily a 150 miles minimum just to get here but well worthwhile considering this ghost town resides in the heart of NV. It was also named after General and president Grant so it was a major town back when it boomed for a short period of time.

On the way to Grantsville is the town of Gabbs although their are places for us to investigate there I am not sure I want. Its one of those places where people live in a trailer in the middle of the desert with a 100 vehicles on their property. Some people go exploring there and some never come out lol. So we definitely made sure we turned off at the right spot. Nothing against Gabbs itself but some towns just do not like new visitors or people who are like me who want to get into every nook and crannie lol.

My buddy Chris told me about this place so I finally decided to go here although its not as preserved as the nearby Berlin this still is a fine ghost town which resides at the bottom of the Shoshone Mountain Range and Toiyabe National Forest. If all you thought of is Nevada being a giant desert your wrong this place is a mix of desert and forest so its very picturesque with lots of scenic backdrops, red cliffs, rock formations and lush foliage.

We did drive around the massive basin which sits between two mountain ranges. I found this one dirt road that went up into this canyon would have explored it since I thought I see another ghost town or some structures but the only thing on my mind was finding Grantsville. While we were in this massive valley/basin we did see dozens of antelope running around I got some good photos of them and I explored some remnants of the outskirts of Grantsville prior to entering this massive canyon to the main town site.

When we entered into Grantsville you could see a few debris piles from mining but also a few stone ruins and a few stone, wood and even a brick structure which is the school. Before I would have us get out I offroaded around town to see what we would explore and where we would start the journey. One of the roads kept going for miles so I ended up turning around and we started on the backside of town.

I am glad we were out this time of year because it meant no rattle snakes once it warms up here forget it you could be bit and their are no hospitals nearby. It just is not worth chancing so most of the time I do my ghost towns in the winter and early Springtime.

The first area we explored was overgrown with brush but their was a stone wall, stone miners cabin then further beyond about 6 to 8 stone foundations. We also found an old safe buried half in the ground and half exposed. I can imagine that the stone ruins served as miner cabins possibly part of stores even saloons back in the towns heyday.

Not to far from there was this small gray bricked structure with a rusty roof and not far from that building was a red brick building with another connected section made of wood. Chris told me the brick structure was a school and that made sense. Grantsville had allot of different structures it also was not far away from at least 3 other boom towns which you could probably hike to if you needed supplies or were into riding your horse to other saloons for a brew. One of the structures the door was just ripped right off the hinges and their was holes within the roof where lie peered on in.

Between the two brick structures their are in a patch of foliage multiple foundations some of the sites their is allot of old broken glass even some relics of the past. I do not touch or take anything but that is just me I like ghost towns to stay as they are I know some people go here to take but that takes away from the ghost towns character so we do not do it!!!

We found this one massive foundation made of stone the walls were as tall as me Id be willing to bet it was at one time a saloon. Not to far from their was an entire home or building made out of stone except this one actually had a roof. The roof was made out of logs laid across diagonally you could also see mud used as filler to keep the sun from peering in it was a natural wonder. I smoked me a bowl in here and we even seen some animal bones inside which is common in the wild west. Coyotes allot of times attack smaller game sometimes even mountain lions and they eat it inside some of these structures perhaps because they think these stone structures are their dens. From examining the bones I found out one of them was part of a jaw bone with teeth still attached the other was a pelvic bone.

I also found what appeared to be an ore cart even some old TNT canisters left behind from the towns mining days. The massive mine which overlooks the town itself I wanted to really check on out so we would make our way over to here. Along the way we came across a wooden collapsed house. Once we walked the mining road to the top of the debris pile the boys took off to go check for what I thought was a mining entrance or cave but it was a no go. No less we got some great scenic photos above the town so it was worth the climb.

We did not see much wildlife here but my son caught a lizard it was fairly large but as soon as he put the one down I found one even bigger then went under one of the houses. NV has a wide range of lizard species some of them can be very beautiful and vary in different colors.

In one of the brick structures their was a fireplace not to far from that was this fenced in sinking aluminum structure that was sinking into the ground. Nearby was this ore chute and a set of ore cart tracks you could walk out onto over a debris pile. I thought that was a really awesome find which made me want to pursue finding a way into the subterranean levels under Grantsville which I would.

Not to far away from the ore chute was an actual entrance into the mines itself. However it was a tight squeeze I made sure everyone stayed behind because it just did not seem very safe. I had to climb through a small hole into the mine then climbed over a second debris pile inside the mine just to be able to stand up. Even once I stood up I had to keep my head low for at least 40' to 50'.

The mine was full of bats on the ceiling I took a few photos of them it is actually quite extensive. I have no idea how long I even spent there because I must had walked through multiple tunnels and it just keeps splitting off over and over. The one thing about being in a mine alone is that its so quiet you can hear a pin drop. But this mine kept getting deeper one of the rooms I went in had a diagonal ore cart shaft which ore could be sent up it from the lower depths. I could not see the bottom nor was I climbing the ladder to the bottom because it was in bad shape.

Their were many large rooms with old mining machinery inside lots of ore cart tracks some rooms were extremely large. I remember one of the rooms was almost 50' in size and I climbed over a massive pile of rocks only to have three more ways to take and then those ways split off while other ways connected to other tunnels. Their was some areas of the mine that their were vertical shafts leading to the lower depths while other dead ends led to rooms with wood ladders you could climb to higher and lower levels. I try never to climb these ladders only because they are very old and sometimes they are not safe. If I happened to climb down a shaft and it broke I might not get back up then what?

However the mine was so large I did not need to go higher or lower into it I had at least gone down 10 to 20 tunnels some were a 100' in length then they would split off. If your not good with mazes or tunnel systems one could get lost down here and I must had been a half of mile maybe a mile deep within the mountain and under Grantsville. The air inside the mine is okay but oxygen levels were low so breathing here was a bit hard as well this is why I told Sue and my kids to stay behind for safety purposes because this is a big unknown.

Its kind of odd because when you first enter the mine you could feel allot of cool air blowing on you but the deeper I traversed the warmer the mine became inside to a point where I was dripping with sweat. I have to say the mine was a bit creepy I heard movement, strange noises, moans, groans and in one area I thought I seen in paint the drawing on the wall of what looked like a demon. I looked at it further its not its just a water stained wall but still very creepy to see considering I was using a very low light in the mines.

One of the rooms had this big rusty water tank while parts of the mine were held up by wood beams which means the mine is not very stable. You have to hope an earthquake does not occur or that would be my tomb. I also found this one shaft or crevice which was probably a 100' deep you fall down their its over. The crevice was held in place by these wood beams crisscrossing all the way to the bottom.

As I went deeper into the mine I found more mine cart tracks some very rusty others had wood ties. Their were some tunnels that were so small I had to crawl on all fours but would open up into bigger rooms or even more tunnels that split off. I did not want to leave Sue or my kids to long so I did start to head back. I figure that in the future I can make a second trip here when I came at Berlin for a couple of days and can explore more of the mine some other time. I must say their was one point in time where I felt something cold over my shoulder and believe me I did not feel alone. I felt as if something was in this one room underground with me in my face my hairs were standing straight up especially after I thought I seen an entity drawn on the wall.

When I climbed out of the mine it felt good to breath fresh air again we would eventually pass an old water tank and park in front of the mill which is not to far from the mine entrance. The mill would process the ore so that it could be shipped out for example some mills separated the cold from the ore then made it into bars to be shipped to various banks or those who ordered it to be used in coin making or whatever.

Next to the mill is an old wood cabin maybe the miners office hard to say. The mill itself is just a mere shell of its former glory sitting on top of a massive foundation of stone then three tiers high. The shell it probably aluminum or tin which was blowing in the wind so allot of creaks due to the rust.

Their was a few holes my son got into one of them it was only a few feet deep. You could see where mixers and other machinery resided within the mill. I explored the first story eventually the second story and this little wood structure that overlooks the entire mill. The little structure had no floor you fall you could get hurt or die so I carefully walked across the wood beams and looked out the window at Sue waving to her. I smoked a bowl up here and yes I walked across the beams just fine I am pretty stable on my feet so heights do not bother me much.

Behind the mill was some other structure an old brick well which was filled with a bunch of wood, dirt and debris. I been to allot of ghost towns but I never seen a well of this size or like this especially where it was located high above the town site itself.

The skeleton was all that remained which held the stamp machines which crushed the ore. Also behind the mill we found a second ore chute which I climbed the ladder to have a look inside of them.  Not to far from that ore bin and structure we found two more mines one went back about 15' while the other was sealed off and was a bat habitat so that was cool.

We eventually were above the mill and could see down inside of it keep in mind the mill has no roof on it its just a skeleton of what it use to be or a shell but it still is standing and during its hey day it was quite the operation. It was the bloodline that kept Grantsville in operation for so long prior to it becoming a ghost town.

When I reached the bottom of the mill we found another foundation more like wood frames which were part of a house or some other business. In the middle of that was an old rusty wood stove so its pretty obvious that at one time years ago much more of the town probably stood but allot of the wood structures fell victim to the elements here including this one.

On our way out of leaving Grantsville I took some awesome scenic photos and even a dust devil. It would be a long drive back home but this was an awesome place to spend the day here, picnic and explore. On our way heading out we drove past this part of the forest that was burned down however their was a vista point where Sue and I took eachothers picture before heading back here. All in all it was a nice day and honestly that is as wild west as your going to get considering this towns remoteness, scenic beauty and historical remnants. Once we had gotten back here we would have a third early morning coming up only this time another trip in the heart of NV to a place called Star City!
Lord Rick
This bone fell victim of a predator most likely it came off a deer and whereever it was easten made it a very likeable meal since this bone is fairly thin and easy to strip the meat off of.
This is a piece of the jaw bone with teeth still attached to it inside one of the ghost towns houses. I found it to be a little more interesting considering it was detached from the skull whatever had gotten to it was fairly powerful enough to cause this. Which proves their are predators in the region.
One could see how easily evidence can be misconstrued inside the mine when turning a corner. When was exploring the mine I thought were perceived to be solid dark entities or shadowmen to actually just be discoloration on the wall. However add in a dim light and a quick glimpse of them and you might have a case of mistaken identity.

I highlighted the boys in a dug out below some caves we found. Although they explored above the dug out for any mine entrances later upon look at my photos I came to realize that their are also natural caves in the region worth a look on a second visii to this region ;ole om this incident.

The only part of the mine which is a three way split that has a mass of ectoplasm which appears in the pass to the front of me and the passage to the right of me. The mine is fairly warm inside especially this deep in so its not cold nor is their any other reason for this effect.
=

The roof is made of timber and the walls of native stoned mortored together to withstand over 100 years of the elements. This home now serves as the lions den as we find a jaw bone with and a badly torn up hip. It is obvious from these finds that predators lurk within the Shoshone Mountains the same ones the pioneers would have to deal with in the 1800's.

These are a few of the clips taken deep inside the Alexander Mine which is massive inside with rooms big enough to hold a couple mini vans and tunnels that lead in all sorts of directions. There are many shafts that go down into the depths of the mine just as their are old rickety ladders that go up into the mountain. If you pay very close attention their is a clip within the video that shows the mines old ore cart tracks.
