Well we do not do this often but we went out on a Sunday night returning to the Yearling Trail and Long Cemetery. It was raining all day so by night fall the fog would be setting on in especially out in Ocala National Forest where some areas are consumed by foliage our night ahead would be difficult.

During the warmer months I try to stay outdoors a lot we go to places like woods, preserves, trails, parks etc it has its advantages I suppose and disadvantages as well. I wanted to return to the Yearling Trail since its the site of a ghost town and there was a book about it which turned into a movie back in the 1940's.

Its also the place where we got lost for hours in so we had to take a different approach and this time we planned everything out very well and it turned out to be quite the investigation. Nothing like putting on some Pink Floyd and cruising out into deer country at night. Jason told me I am crazy cause I was driving down them country roads like a cop lol.

I was still pretty tired from fishing and swimming all day Saturday at the inlet. We even had another shark encounter and were just plain tired Saturday from being outdoors all day so that is why we ended up changing our investigation to Sunday instead and so our investigation begins here.

Yearling Trail Investigation 2

We took a different approach to the trail instead of parking at Pat's Island we actually parked and hiked in at where the Yearling Trail Began. This place would lead us to a hidden Cemetery in the woods and the homestead of the Longs.

Starting to hike down the trail felt very uncomfortable. This time the trail was more like a wagon road and we had such thick brush that was about 6 to 8 feet in height on both sides of us. Within that brush were many burnt or broken trees without any leaves on them. So you could tell a fire hit the area at one time.

The sky was dark a few stars peaked threw but eventually no light was peaking threw and we had at least a few miles of hiking to do. Hiking a few miles in town and in the woods are a different experience. Once your in the woods your in  for the long run there is no escape.

We started to hike in and found a trail head map which had a giant cockroach, scorpions and spiders all over the place on it. We knew this was the least of our problems because the deeper we went in on the trail the worst the mosquito's became.

The trail started to become very think at some point not as bad though as Pat's island during our first investigation. We came to an open area and historical road. Now keep in mind we had to pinpoint where the cemetery could be in the woods so on one occasion we took a poor trail walking a few hundred feet to a dead end.

Jason's light ran out and the fog at this point was so thick it was very hard to see but we kept on and did not turn back. I was sort of laughing to myself cause it seems like lately we get ourselves in really deep. I did feel relieved though cause the only set of tracks we found were none but our own.

As we got a couple miles in we did find the cemetery which Ill get into in the next report since that is a separate investigation in itself. However after the cemetery we got back on the trail where it split in 3 different directions. One way would take us back to where we were a few weeks ago the other way would take us to the Long Homestead.

We started to head towards the Long Homestead that is when my camera made a grinding noise. You can say that its broke so now I have no digital camera sighs and it will be a few months before I can afford one unfortunately when you use equipment in fog, rain, cold weather, humid weather etc eventually it does break down.

Jason and I encamped on the ground for a half hour why I tried to repair my camera it was a no go. There was a loud noise near us not sure if something fell out of a tree but that was our queue to go. We were being eaten alive by giant mosquitoes.

The trail became very unfriendly as we were going threw tunnels of foliage, running into spider webs and even at times the trail we almost lost sight of. I did notice something strange not to far from the Long Homestead which was a set of children's footprints that went for about 100 feet and ended with no turning back or even an adult print along side of it.

Eventually we reached a little open area in the woods that was the Long Homestead. They had a fence around it and I noticed a small stone foundation. Nothing else appeared to be left here. I felt a little watched in this area and the fog was really thick. Its hard to believe this was the area The Yearling was filmed at.

Eventually we had to start our long hike back. Jason was getting a little dizzy, fatigued and perhaps even dehydrated. I mean you have to keep in mind we are hiking threw giant spider webs, mosquitoes, the humidity is at 100 percent and were drenched so it was a rough hike back to the truck.

We also spotted heading back down the trail a set of tracks maybe a bear or bobcat I could not tell but they went for a good mile so something was walking up the trail while we were at the Long Homestead and we just missed it. There are a lot of animals out in the woods of Ocala some of them angry boars lol.

Eventually we did get back to the car Jason took to the left trail and I got side tracked wound up on the right one and had to cut threw a bush which came right atop of my passenger door. Talk about sensing out the vehicle.

I do remember there was one part of the trail that was ice cold like something was following us but other then that the Yearling trail was quite peaceful. I did not feel alone out here I felt like the foot prints did not add up. But the woods here were different then the woods we were in a few weeks ago.

There was no swamps or water nearby and the woods were more like woods not tropics on this part of the trail. It was a pretty intense hike though.

After these two photos the fog just was to thick to take photos. The first one is an ectoplasmic photo the second one is a bright orb to the right. We thought the fog in the area was very odd here since we were hiking to Long Cemetery. It did not follow us into the cemetery till about 20 minutes later it creeped up on us.
