The
Yearling Trail
We parked at the Yearling trail last week but did not get to investigate
it. But upon further research I was pretty amazed about the history of the
area.
The area is divided up into 3 areas the Juniper Tract, Harpers Prairie and
Pat's Island area. We decided to take the road to Pat's Island. The road
was unmarked very rough and narrow. We took it for a few miles and talk
about eerie there is no people nearby, campers, towns etc its just a road
to nowhere.
We parked up at Pat's island and checked both trailheads nearby. One
seemed to be a hiking trail while the other was a historic trail
leading to various points of interest. The only problem is the number on
the trail head was way off it said 10 and was supposed to be 1 so I was a
little skeptical.
We started our hike down a rugged trail at times it was over grown, trees
were blocking it, and at times the trees draped as low as our heads. We
took the trail for over a mile and at first we heard something very large
in the woods it was coming towards us. I thought perhaps it was a bear but
now I am not so sure since it stopped dead along the trail. I also
heard a loud noise it was like a roar but not quite.
At this point we did not see a trail marker which really was upsetting
cause I wanted to tour these foundations and historical sites. We crossed
a dirt road and that led us into another area of the woods. Based on the
map we had of the trails we had not encountered the loop back around and
none of the markers listed on the map were on the trail.
We did encounter some very HOT spots and some very COLD spots as far as
activity. I do feel they were supernatural in origin I mean the area was
technically at one time a small ghost town or community.
Eventually we started hiking around this giant pond and across from it was
this old stairwell we did not want to take the path we found in the woods
possibly heading that way cause we just did not want to get side tracked
but at this point its ironic cause we did end up getting lost eventually
anyhow lol.
We started to hike along a giant lake the water was low it was swampy and
we had high grass all around us. I could hear alligators close by so I
knew anything could be hiding amongst the brush ready to snap down on our
legs.
We kept as close as we could on the bank and there was a dirt trail just
heavily over grown till it ended and we were stuck having to fight threw
thick brush to get around the lake which came out onto a dirt road.
When we were on the dirt road we seen a sign that said Harpers Prairie
which led us into a abandoned campground. The front gate was broken and
this place was about as spooky as it gets with rusted water wells,
overgrown picnic benches etc. nobody had been back here in ages there was
no tire tracks or even a single foot print. We followed the road which
seemed to go out onto a peninsula and loop around back to the entrance.
During our hike I heard something big once again moving out in front of us
although we did see a deer way off we could not find an explanation for
whatever was heavily cutting through the brush but I felt watched and when
I shined my lights it would stop so it was very intelligent.
We hiked back down the road and found another dirt road at this time the
moon was a red crescent over the lake. Things were getting very hard for
us we were tired from miles of hiking and all alone with nothing for
miles. I knew if we cut over we could make it back to Pats Island and of
course the road turned out to be the same one we had crossed earlier on
the trail.
But silly me did not take it cause I felt like we could just get back to
the car taking a softer road which would be good for our feet.
Unfortunately the four wheel road we took led us into the woods with many
fallen trees. When we climbed over them we kept on the trail and well the
trail was no longer a trail it was woods.
I figured since the trail ran to our left we could cut into the woods till
we met up with it. Well we must had cut through woods for over a mile and
sadly we never encountered a trail. The woods were getting rough Jason's
legs were all cut up he was made at me cause I only had a few abrasions
but then again I been hiking in the Florida back woods for a couple years
so I know what not to walk through lol.
The woods were horrible there was trees so close together we had to
squeeze in between them, climb over fallen evergreens, crawl in holes,
step over bushes and palmetto it was crazy and our visibility was very
poor in front of us. Sadly despite all our spotlights we had on us almost
every one was going dead accept for my 10 million candlelight power one I
know that bad boy would save us lol. I also used my compass which
helped out a lot as well.
We came out in a clearing eventually and it was a sigh of relief. The
clearing was over a half of mile by a half of mile with many hills and no
trees. I shined my light in the distance and seen a set of blue eyes and
white eyes. I thought to myself deer but not sure cause the blue
eyes were at our eye and they blinked once then sank down to the
ground still staring then back up then they slowly hide behind a dead
tree. The eye span was very large and Jason was very startled I think him
being lost was enough but then seeing the eyes through him overboard.
I was laughing the whole time cause what does not kill you makes you
stronger but I was in a state of humor cause I thought to myself how much
worst can it get. We are miles away from the car, my cell phone is dead,
the fog is starting to set in so thick we could barely see, our lights our
almost out of juice, it was starting to rain and on top of it we had eyes
all over the place staring at us. You would laugh to if you were miles
from your car and did not know where you were lol. Hell even the rangers
would not find us.
Anyhow I followed some treads which led us to the area we seen the eyes
and strongly it led us back out of the woods on that ATV trail. So we took
the four wheel trail back out to this dirt road and I got back on the
Florida Trail which meandered a couple miles through the woods back to
where we parked the truck.
Our lights were almost out and it was pitch black. I heard some odd noises
but for the most part it was peaceful. There were parts of the trail that
had fog and it was almost daylight but still very dark. Most of me walking
I did on instinct besides the fact I have the eyes of an owl at night. So
I took the lead but at that time I was covered in spider webs. Most of the
giant webs I cut up with my sword which I had drawn most of the
investigation cause of wild boars, gators, and spiders on the trail.
It was quite an adventure and we did make it back to the car past 6 am. We
will return to this area for another investigation sometime and try hiking
on a few other trails in search of the Yearly Ghost town.
In conclusion to this report there was a lot of activity out here. I heard
noises, movement, groans, very temperature variations, and eyes. I really
do think that there is bigfoot in this region. Despite the nice weather
there was nobody out here I mean most roads go for miles along with the
dozens of miles of trails in the area which shoot out all over the Ocala
Forest. I mean the area is very desolate I seen at least 25
different deer out here.
We work very hard on our investigations and I spent most of the day trying
to rest so I do apologize for the lack of sends. It was all and all an
adventurous night. We even seen a giant spider attack this palmetto bug
not the type of arachnid you want to mess with. But it was nice to get
home It took me an hour to clean off all the webbing on my body but the
cube steak was quite well for breakfast lol. Peace
