      Gold Butte is hundred of thousands of acres of vast wilderness and the Whitney Pockets is only a small portion of this wonderful scenic location. Not to mention that just a few miles away from the pockets is the very strange Devils Throat beyond that a ghost town and a location called Devils Fire due to its red sandstone geological formations. All these locations surround Whitney Pockets however few only dare to proceed deeper into the vast wilderness. The Whitney Pockets area holds many key sites which included the CCC Dam, Whitney Hartman Dam, Caves, Petroglyphs and even a Cold Storage site. Years ago the Whitney Pockets area was rather vacated but today its becoming an extremely popular location for four wheeling, hiking, nature watching, camping and for paranormal enthusiast like myself exploring the strange. Sadly as more people pour into the area so does the amount of vandalism and litter. Sometimes my purpose and my only purpose to put locations on my site in hopes to educate others how important preservation and respect is for such unique locations. Whitney Pockets is over 4000 years old at one time the Anasazi Indians roamed these canyons and climbed these rocks. One of the more famous Petroglyphs is the falling man and their are some old cave dwellings also to be found here where ancient tribes once dwelled. If you hike around the area you will find many agave roasting pits that were left by the ancients. Not to mention the fact that Lake Mead and the Virgin River are within miles where plentiful water could be gathered if needed. However in the 20th century settlers, miners, pioneers etc learned how to store their water to irrigate their crops and hydrate their horses on a regular basis. Since it rained very rarely in the pockets and the river was quite considerable a days hike the only solution would be to build a dam to store water. With that in mind one of my favorite key locations within the pockets is the Civilian Conservation Corp Dam amongst the sculpted red and white sandstone rocks. There is another dam near the CCC one which was built by a Whitney Hartman this one was a little smaller. What I want our viewers to understand is that Gold Butte is a harsh wilderness with temperatures rising as high as almost 120 degrees during the summer. In the 1930's the government had made it attentive to put men on various construction projects especially those who were in need of public assistance during the great depression. In return those men would be paid with either food or money that they could use to provide for their families. This dams craftsmanship is a symbol of the Americans will to survive during a period where this country faced many hardships. The dam sits in a unique location which is a narrow slot canyon so that rain water can be captured and held back. The run off of the water could be collected then stored and used. During my visit here the dam was dry so we were able to climb the stone stairs on both sides and even sit at the top of the dam enjoying the pretty rock formations. Please keep in mind to treat the dam with respect as despite its age the dam is in fairly great shape. Another strange location near the Whitney Pockets is a place called Devils Throat. Devils throat is a sink hole creating from the circulation of ground water dissolving the limestone. Eventually when the ground water eroded the underground pockets it caused instability thus causing the ground to collapse forming this natural geological formation. Nobody has an exact estimate on its depth or diameter across based on all the various websites which talk about it. However it is safe to say that its about a hundred feet across and deep based on my estimation. The sinkhole is not completely done forming either as it is still continuously growing that is why some of the fencing surrounding it has had to be extended beyond the original boundary. Unlike most sink holes such as Devils Hole in FL this is one that you cannot hike down into as the drop offs are sheer straight cliffs to its rocky bottom. It is dangerous and the edges are crumbling just as if you hike around in the desert their are deep holes which might eventually suffer the same fate. I did take video footage to show our viewers on our video page just how deadly this hole is. Nonetheless it is one of the stranger locations that the Gold Butte area offers all within miles of Whitney Pockets.
