One of Florida's largest citrus operations
was in operation from the 1800s to about 1983 called the Strawn Citrus
Packing Plant. The area is technically is a historical agricultural
district composed of roughly 17 separate buildings and structures. Some of
those buildings include a mule barn, wagon barn, granary, and two small
residences for seasonal laborers. They currently want to turn the plan
into a Florida Agricultural Museum and believe me if this place was fixed
up it would be worth every penny to get in.
David Strawn the current owner of the buildings decided to the move the operation to Flagler count and sell the historical buildings. He actually was going to have them demolished then decided to donate them to the Florida Agricultural Museum. What the museum wants to do is actually move all the structures to a new location which in my opinion is insane. The land is as important as the buildings itself. Even when walking around you can still see oranges on the ground from the very few citrus trees surrounding the area. Along with the historic structures their will be the Florida's Governor Caldwell Dairy Barn. The cost for the Strawn project will be funded with a $350,000 grant. But from our investigation we seen alot of work needed to be done. Their is so many things to see around here I mean almost everything has been left behind machinery, old wagon wheels, and even a piano. Its just an eerie place feels almost alive even when walking threw it. Some places we go they are about the ghost other places are about good old fashioned urban exploring. Either way this was an awesome place. When restoration is complete it will be part of a 39,000 square foot living history exhibit with livestock, farm implements, wagons, tools etc. The Strawn exhibit will be used to show others the agricultural history to FL during an important time period from the transition to horse, mule, and oxen power all the way to mechanical means. The reason for our investigation is someone wrote me told me to check into the place told me that their is the ghost of a man which is said to haunt the plant. I am not sure if its true or not but its a century old factory alot of history to this place. I mean everything is overgrown with vines, their is an old water tower, even a service station and old antique car on the property. Its just like an imprint in time and you can envision workers throwing the oranges in the crates. The administrations building the safe had been broken into and ransacked. Just as the tool shed still has old tools used in the maintenance of the plant. I really think our fans and members are going to enjoy seeing photos from this place. © By Lord Rick-AngelOfThyNight |
