Silver Glen Springs & Lake George

We found a trail head and parked near it in this giant open area. It was pretty spooky all the woods to our one side were dead or burnt from a fire. There was a dark trail leading up a hill but we wanted to focus on Lake George so we started our hike eastward instead. Jason told me that a deer almost hit my truck right before we parked and geared up so you can already imagine how woodsy the area is.

We started our hike down a long road with signs every so often down the road. I would say after about 20 minutes of walking we did not see much but woods on both sides. We seen a booth, rest rooms, a general store and house in the middle of the woods as well. The road leading into the springs area was deathly cold I was shivering most of our hike. We hit some pretty intense cold spots some were a 15 degree difference.

When we reached the end of the road it came to a huge parking area with a wood building for rest rooms and another structure which was a store. We could not find anything about the springs or trails here. The moon was becoming bright in the sky to a point where we did not even need lights.

We tried taking one dirt road which led us to a lit house probably a ranger or caretaker so we turned around and took this other long road near his driveway.

The road had a lot of woods on both sides and we heard some movement which I chased down. It turned out to be a large armadillo which ran when I got about two feet away trying to capture its photo. I laughed cause when your investigating bigfoot you have to make sure you chase down any movements or sounds. Also later down that road a deer ran out near us so it was obvious there was a lot of animals out during the full moon.

We found a trail head but did not take it since we thought this road would lead us to the springs. Well the road went on for almost another mile and it led us to an open area with rotted cut up wood. There was a harsh dirt road leading deep in the woods which said do not enter well we took it anyway's.

The road led us through evergreen trees mainly and I noticed a fenced in area full of 1000's of soda cans. We also seen other equipment along side of the road. It was obvious that this area was storage for the park like picnic benches, trash cans etc. The road eventually led us to that house in the woods on the back side so we had to turn around.

It was a long hike and a long shot but we took the trail in the middle of the woods. There was no signs it was just a mystery. We did not even have a clue as to where to go since the trail split off in two different directions. To the left was thick woods and in front of us was a lot of sand leading down hill.

We took the trail heading towards Lake George in a very thick woods setting as it meandered in various types of faunas. Some areas were very tropical while others we seen giant weeping willows with a lot of tree moss.

At times the trail twisted and turned. The area had beautiful overhangs at times we could not even see the night sky. We were also covered in spider webs since I did most of the leading I was eating them heh. The path was not very active but I kept feeling watched like something was ahead of us. At one point I heard some pretty loud movement in the woods yet we did not see anything. The movement stopped dead in its tracks when we started to chase it down.

Jason and I finally made it to the Lake George Overlooks. There was a little beach and we set up an encampment here for awhile. We shined our spotlights and seen a few gators staring back at us. The lake was enormous and the roots of some trees were growing out of the water here. It was really nice and I believe I found what was a small Indian mound along the shore as we explored further.

We got back on the trail and took another trail to our right which turned into the Lake George trail. It started to run Parallel with the lake and we found a sign stating that this was the second largest Florida lake and that it was 18 by 5 miles length and width. After that we knew the trail probably went for almost 18 miles so it was about time for us to turn back.

We walked further and seen more gators their were even some drop offs along the shore that were pretty steep. We found another shore line area and came across these weird roots hundreds of them growing like spikes out of the ground and water. I never seen anything like it before so we had to be careful one fall could lead to serious injury.

After some explorations Jason and I set on off to head back to where the main trail started. Our walk back honestly was not to difficult we heard a very loud bird going crazy halfway down the trail and a owl hooting. The moon was piercing the trees and it was a little less active on our way back.

The large movement we heard on the trail we never heard again but I was almost sure something was watching and following us on our way out near the overlooks. I checked for prints in the sand but we did not find none so if bigfoot resides in the area he is getting his water perhaps from a small creek we found in the woods on the way back.

There were a few benches we found in the woods which were very old for people to bird watch then we knew we were almost back to civilization. We ended up back at the trail entrance and this time I took a chance after miles of hiking the path to the left.

We went down this sandy hill with some woods on both sides. Off in the distance I could hear a pontoon boat this is the second time but we could not find where it was coming from. Eventually we came to this big open area with dozens of picnic benches and a volleyball net.

To the left of the open area was the springs cause we noticed the railings along the shore and various wood stairwells leading down into the water. The water here was crystal clear almost blue. We could see house boats just a little past the swimming area along with that many gators just staring at us.

They were almost in the swimming area and the springs looked very unused since plant life was growing mildly on the bottom unlike Deleon Springs. But like most springs in Florida the water stays a constant 73 degrees and the water is crystal clear.

We also found a booth of some kind near the springs I turned it into a bar lol. This area was a lot of fun then after our break I seen some giant mounds towards the back of the park. When we arrived it turned out to be Indian Shell Mounds.

The one was extremely long and steep which we climbed up on it. The mound went fairly far off in the woods. Some of the oyster and snail shells were still whole from hundreds of years ago. I was really happy to have found the shell midden as over the years many artifacts have been retrieved here so we definitely found some native American history.

Afterwards we started to follow a path to another smaller mound where tree roots grew around it. Many of the mounds here however had been destroyed or used to make roads from the crushed shell so only a couple mounds were full in tact.

Jason and I took one last look at the springs on a path that followed along side of them. We seen a giant hole under water leading to the spring head or anotherwards caverns under water. Out of the hole came a giant cat fish wish I had my fishing pole lol.

It was a very peaceful area and eventually we headed on off up a hill which actually took us almost back to the entrance booth. Here we spent 2 hours looking for the springs when in reality they were only a couple minutes away from where we parked.

We finished off the investigation getting back to the truck. It felt a lot cooler where we had parked and less friendly. We packed our gear up and headed on off to our final destination of the night called Bluffton Point.
