The Orange City Town Hall was built on land donated by Maj. E.B. Alling. When it was built in 1928 it cost $20,000 to construct this New England structure. The second floor had a 200-seat auditorium built into this monolithic building. The bell was donated by the Orange City Methodist church which weighs about 517lbs.

The building today is now 74 years old and symbolizes the important architectural and political links to Orange City's history. Incorporation of Orange City did not take place till 1882 at the DeYarman Hotel. If you recall we investigated up head just to make note of it The Dickinson Library. Well the library at one time was the residence of DeYarman.

Edward B. Alling was the mayor in 1928 who kept pushing the issue to have a Town Hall Built and of course the voters did decide. It only took 5 months to build this structure all the way from the corner stone to the dedication. There were a few design flaws such as the staircase to the second floor cuts across the window opening or the brick window on the right hand side when you first walk in.

The site that the Town Hall was built on was owned by Alling the mayor.  The town hall has 17inch thick walls in the basement, pine floors, brass hardware and foyer lights from Britain with creamy white glass globes etches with gold depictions of women and fountains. The basement according to records was a jail and the city council meetings were held upstairs. Their are bars on two cell windows remnants of the past. One of the cells has an original steel cell door and doorframe. Now today they use the cells as storage.

The four faced clock was purchased from the Seth Thomas Co and the chimes ring on the hour and once every half hour.  Just before WWII the rear basement extension was added. Then later the area had bay doors and housed a fire department till it was moved across the street. It was also a public works department. In 1993 the area was renovated and now its used by the building and zoning departments. Their are also offices for the city manager for Orange City.

Their is no doubt in my mind that the town hall is not haunted. Here you have this old colonial type of structure built near many other historical structures some which do not exist today. But being it was a jail, a fire department and many other things that would leave a wide range of various supernatural phenomena. Does something walk the halls of this old building? Do the veterans from the warms watch over their monuments? Is the old prison in the basement long forgotten or do the prisoners chose to never leave? These are all questions we must ask and now we can bring you a story!
