Tammy had a job interview so I wanted to integrate our preliminary investigation of the Stewart Indian School to began the month of December. I had been told about this place by others but I did not realize that their were over 80 buildings made of stone on the premises.
 
We first made a quick stop before sun down just to drive around on the property so that when we returned later we could decide what we wanted to see and investigate. Sadly since power lines run throughout the many streets found on the campus property we were not able to take accurate EMF readings. However I would take EVP recordings time to time to see if we could pick up on anything strange.
 
You see the Stewart Indian School is listed under the National Registry Of Historic Places but at least 80 percent of the campus has been abandoned to sealed off. This is because the school closed in 1980 and was deemed unsafe since it did not meet Earthquake standards. Some of the buildings although used by the state of NV are also used by law enforcement for training. So they were pulling others over in practice training exercises.
 
The most obvious landmark is the huge water tower which you can see from a few miles away as you dip down towards the Pine Nut Mountain Range.The place reminded me a bit of a ghost town and perhaps it should have been considering over 400 people at one time lived on site. They grew there own food, ran work shops and lived in dorms. At least the students did the staff of the school had their own little cottages to live in.
 
After driving around for awhile we returned an hour later by then a cold front was coming on in with massive Cirrus Clouds draping over the school. Later that night high winds and snow would sweep through the area but it sure made at the time for great photography giving off an eerie essence.
 
My theory with the school is that since so many children died from the Spanish and Russian Flu that many of the dearly departed never left the grounds even in the afterlife. I still believe I am right on that notion even though they are buried in the nearby cemetery just across from the school itself.
 
Tammy and I started at the Church and main administration building. We would walk a complete circle around the property till we reached our truck. The first part of our jaunt would include the girls dorms, post office, dining hall, old gym, trading post, classrooms and abandoned athletic field. The fields were very overgrown you could barely see the football field and baseball diamond.
 
When we came around to the workshops, staff cottages and the agricultural center. The barns were really awesome my favorite part of my exploration. I have never seen such large stone barns with large wooden double doors seen in the lofts. They are all amazing pieces of history which should be kept preserved because their are no barns like these.
 
When we came down the main road we visited the Quad which is this enclosed in area more or less it had multiple uses. We would eventually make our way through the center of campus checking out classrooms. We also seen an old basketball court most of the hoops had no nets or were bent.
 
On the eastern end of campus contained the boys dorms that included the newer gym, water tower, principals home, infirmary and the auditorium. Also those buildings on the east end of campus are used as some kind of police academy for state troopers. So while taking photos I walked in the middle of about 10 police officers and yes you are allowed to be on the property. I seen one guy jogging while I enjoyed taking a break at the park where the water tower is. Flags commemorate various veterans who have passed away draped across the trees found here.
 
The winds were picking up so recording EVP here was very difficult as you can imagine. However our first investigation is not our last. I have plans on revisiting this place a couple more times to continue my research of the stone buildings over 80 to be precise and the grounds.
 
After we left the school we drove past the Old Stewart Cemetery I did not stop here though because it is a very sacred location to many of the Natives. However what I can tell you is that nearly half of the interments are of children who passed away from sickness while attending this boarding school.
 
I did however visit the newer cemetery formed in 1940 which contains many students, family members, teachers and members of the Wungnema family who lived on that land prior to it becoming a cemetery. The sun was almost down the winds were blustering so I only walked around the entire cemetery once and read one of the historic plaques I found.
 
Overall this was a really solid exploration it was more of one then an investigation. You really cannot enter any of the buildings as they are sealed tightly. Maybe one day someone will grant us access into them if we are willing to sign a disclosure statement of some kind. I would love to take photos inside some of the buildings but most of them are boarded up. We found one small workshop that we could enter but it was just a room collapsing from its stones falling on into it.
 
Would I like to see more? I sure would I think this place is amazing historically as it is tragically. I mean can you imagine shipping your child off to school only to get a letter later down the road to find out your son or daughter perished from the flu. Imagine that the faculty attended your child's funeral while parents lived all over the west so they did not receive word right away about it. So technically their is a sadness that is looming over the campus you can feel it and that is why I went ahead to go ahead with this project. This is probably one of the finest remaining boarding schools in the entire western United States.
