 The rising of Irontown came to be in 1868 founded by a Peter Shirts. However the true investor into the industry and develop of the town was all due to an investor by the name of Ebenezer Hanks. Hanks established the Union Iron Company which later became the Great Westerm Iron Company. This iron company was a very active company as every 8 hours 800lbs of iron could be produced and it did. It did it day and night of course like most iron works eventually operations ceased. Just a couple years after the opening of the company their were almost 100 townsfolk who resided in Iron City. The town had kilns, furnance, molding and pattern shop. Today the kilns are still standings their appears to be a third one but its in ruins. In the west their were only a few iron industrial towns this one happened to be in Utah. About 50 miles away is another similar location as charcoal kilns were a very vital tool in the development of iron. Iron was more precious in the later 1800s then even gold. You could build ships with the material....factories....buildings etc which were used in the 20th centuries development of America. About 7 to 8 tons a day of iron could be shipped using the Western Utah Railroad while some was moved by ox to smaller venues such as miners or townsfolk of Pioche NV. Not to far away from Pioche is another kiln series of remnants so you tend to wonder if both companies worked together with supply and demand. The twelve oxen that are found at the LDS Temple in St George was made of Iron that was molded and specially designed right here in Iron City. Most appreciate a structure such as a temple but few understand that the art within such a location was brought in from many other towns which today no longer exist. This to me was more of an urbex although paranormal energy could be present within the town. Their is nice little path ways within the town, foundations, kilns, lake, mountains, walls, artifacts etc Their is no cost to get in and it is a state park. It is a special place because the state of Utah allows others to visit it freely and enjoy a day out here. So if you decide to visit it help keep it preserved for years to come. Most of the town is erased from vandals and treasure hunters. At one time a black smith, school, and many residences stood near the foundry where men worked night and day. Today the area is vast a few residents live near the lake surrounding Irontown but its in a world of its own I am telling you. So we hope our viewers can enjoy this special feature on our site as its like no other. Its extremely secluded sits off on a dirt road just an all around great location to hike around in. Anyhow back on the history track eventually the iron works had no choice but to shut down. Most of the iron that was supplied in the early 1870s was to Mormon settlers and small businesses. The larger businessness required more iron and even though Iron town could produce it the company could not meet the costs to ship it. They were expending more then what they were making thus the industry closed down. By 1876 the iron company shut down which despersed the community to move on to where the employment was at thus seeking new endeavors. Further Below this is what I found about it on Wikipedia. The boys enjoyed eating it if one were to become stranded in the desert you could technically survive on the fruit as it also contains a high amount of water. I had James break it in half to show our viewers the soft pulp inside.   Old Iron Town, originally Iron City, is a ghost town in Iron County, in the U.S. state of Utah. It is located in Dixie National Forest, about 22 miles (35 km) from Cedar City. The settlement was founded in 1868 as a second attempt to mine iron from Iron Mountain after a disappointing yield from Cedar City. The colony lasted until 1876, when strife from the Edmunds–Tucker Act and Panic of 1873 forced its closure. The site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. Brigham Young left Nauvoo, Illinois to establish Salt Lake City in 1847. Young quickly realized that the fastest way to an independent Mormon state was to make the new colony self-sufficient. One important resource in this regard was iron, which was very expensive to ship from the eastern United States. The city of Parowan was founded in 1851 to provide iron for the settlers, which was mined in nearby Iron Mission (Cedar City). Mismanagement plagued these new settlement, and only 400 short tons (360 t) of iron were produced over a six-year period. Iron was nonetheless needed for continued Mormon prosperity, so a second attempt at mining the region was made in 1868. The newly formed Union Iron Works organized an establishment at the southern base of Iron Mountain on Pinto Creek, west of Cedar City. By the third year, over 2,500 pounds (1,100 kg) of iron were produced every day. The company expanded in 1873 and continued to mine ore for three more years. At its peak, the settlement included a schoolhouse, blacksmith, charcoal furnaces, and a foundry. The city was abandoned in 1876. An attempt was made to revive mining from Iron Mountain, but the church was struggling with litigation over the Edmunds–Tucker Act and the Panic of 1873. Today, the ruins feature a preserved beehive style charcoal oven and a furnace known as an "Arastra", which prepared sands for molds. Parts of the original foundry remain, including the chimney. The site was fenced off by the Sons of Utah Pioneers. It is currently within grounds designated as the Dixie National Forest. The Frontier Homestead State Park Museum in Cedar City provides information about and artifacts from the site. The ruins are found on Iron Town Road, which intersects with Utah State Route 56. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 14, 1971 as Old Iron Town.
