Once part of Edgewood/Greenwood Cemetery the old church cemetery was fenced off perhaps because of its historical significance to some of the first settlers to the Apopka area. But maybe this was called the old Church cemetery because a Methodist Church was built on this cemetery ground and was later destroyed by a windstorm in 1912. The first school was also located here but burned down. Do you see a pattern?

One of the first burials in old Church started in the 1850s. Today its 105 permanent guest have many graves that are either unmarked, unreadable or even unknown. The cemetery itself is has a real eerie feeling and appears to be older then what is told by historical records. Many of the graves have stones in circles, some are tipped, others are real slender and tall. This is the type of cemetery you would see in a foggy horror film. The first pioneer Methodist Minister is buried here and the last burial that took place was in 1960 almost 50 years ago. The cemetery now lays forgotten even the flowers are withered and dead amongst the graves.

Also on the site in 1924 is the G.W. McClure grave which 12 robed members of the Ku Klux Klan marched from the Methodist Church from its Main Street location to the cemetery with an American Legion Contingent. He was one of the first KKK members to be buried and the first KKK funeral to have taken place was that of Benjamin B. Collier during 1925. Klan Member Rev. Holmes Logan presided over the service but the Klan members conducted the funeral. Collier was a Confederate Veteran and was said to be buried near where Old Church Cemetery is. Since their are so many unreadable gravestones I believe he is buried here. The American Flag and a fiery cross were carried to the gravesite during the funeral. I am not sure of G.W. McClure and Collier are two of the same people or if they were two of the south's first Klan members to have been buried in Florida. Although their is a one year old child baring the name Clara Belle McClure which I would assume is the daughter of G.W. McClure.

So much of the cemetery has a history to it such as having a confederate soldier buried here and even a few World War Veterans but sadly these graves remain forgotten. The thought of this place being haunted is a simple scenario to figure out just walk amongst these graves and one can understand.
