     Modena Utah is an old railroading town/camp that was said to be named after Modena Italy when an Italian Laborer founded its name. Others said that a Chinese cook locally in the area who would serve dinner to the laborers saying Mo'Dinna. Prior to the name Modena the town was called Deseret Springs. The town really didnt reach its peak till 1899 when Brigham J. Lund and his other two business partners named E.M. Brown and Jose Price came to the area to start a small business. The company expanded shipping out to cities like St. George Utah, Pioche NV and Delamar. I have been to them all however Delamar is today a ghost town and is nonactive. Lund in 1903 incorporated the B.J. Lund & Company which operated out of the General Merchandise & Hotel building. This building along with many others in Modena can be found with the name Lund on the front of it. We did do a paranormal investigation of the Lund Hotel. The building is falling apart but despite this fact the building is historic and has a basement which is a rare find in this part of the country. In 1903 the town also had a US Weather Bureau office which also was as rare as a building having a basement. Today much remains to be seen for example the Last Chance Saloon still stands but stands alone boarded on up. The towns stone school house also stands today and an Edna Thorley at 91 years old had taught at one time elementary school here. She still resides in the town along with 5 other families who watch over the town. Edna is more then happy to share some of her scrapbooks with those interested in the towns history. The town was not as technological as St. George afterall power was not working in the town till the 1940s just as the town had one telephone which everyone used in the general store. The railroad depot had a telegraph office as well however when the depot shut down so did the office. Despite the town had a natural spring where they could replenish water for the steam engines a hotel fire had caused the town to be rebuilt at the present day Modena site which would be only the beginning of hardships that would befall this railroading camp. However unlike most ghost towns this one seen the transition from Stagecoaches all the way to the automobile. Some towns never seen anything other then the stagecoach unlike the railroading town of Modena. Modena sat in a centralized location between southern Utah and NV so thus when the train came into town commodities could be shipped out. Just as many travelers could come here and buy goods as well. Just as outlaws would come here to drink a brew at the saloon. At one time in the early 1900s this town was bustling full of farmers, minders and general laborers. The town in 1908 sheared 140,000 sheep wool that could be used in clothing across America. The town also had mines silver and gold up in the mountains surrounding Modena. The miners would come into town for supplies and food. The CCC and WPA built the town up around the time the town was booming. This would not last very long however as steam engines were no longer needed thus Modena the watering stop became a desolate place for the railroad as diesal engines were replaced. Not to mention the harsh winters and drought nearly turned this place into a ghost town. Today most of the entire town is for sale you could own your own ghost town and much of the history remains..
