In 2002 Congress designated the Muddy Mountains Wilderness area as a preservation site so that adventurers like me can hike, camp and explore the historic Lovell Canyon. The reason why most of you have not heard much about this place is that it is 48,000 acres of canyons, mountains and a few historic sites such as the Anniversary and Ore Cart Mines.  Do not mistaken this area as the Lovell Canyon in the spring mountains this Lovell Canyon is on Lake Mead.  I am almost sure that eventually this area may become a state park in itself to help preserve it even further.

Our exploration would lead us on an old mining road passing by two mine tunnels off in the distance to a summit where we encountered mill ruins and into a deep wash in the muddy mountains. I would not trade this adventure for the world for being within miles of Las Vegas this may be one of the best kept secrets that others have recently learned about like myself.

Let me tell you how I portray hiking here just from my perspective. The sun setting on the rocks makes them look like smoldering fires. The mountains on one side almost look like rainbows while sand dunes can be seen for miles rippling between dark brown mountains. The wash and Lovell canyon are an adrenaline rush as you can tell that if it rained you would have no choice but to escape quickly or be washed away by flash flooding. The rocks are smooth in the canyon again giving the feeling that for thousands of years raging waters shaped the canyons here.

When you enter the Lovell Canyon area they have a sign for the gem club. You are allowed to mine here a photo of the sign is further below on this page. Now I am not saying your going to hit the lotto and get gold. But some of the gems found here are very pretty and worth more sentimentally so I recommend you scour the canyon for some gems. Maybe its the pirate in me speaking who knows I do think though drinking a beer and gem hunting in the middle of the night is a grand experience. What is even more grand is that the beauty of this location is sick but sick in the good way so anyone read this does not get scared.

On a more serious know a man by the name of Francis M. Smith also known as "The Borax King" owned the Anniversary Mine which operated in Lovell Wash. The wash ran from the muddy mountains to Lake Mead just another bonus if you wish to hike the area to its entirety.  Smith recieved the claim on his anniversary with his second wife.

One area they call the bowl of fire is just that I have a photo of what I believe is the bowl and in the other photo I am standing on the edge of a cliff. Its pretty good stuff this is the type of adventure your going to get from this place.  You get everything from narrows to deep washes to gems and history. It is hard to believe that back in the early 1900's miners lived in this wilderness and so much still remains undiscovered amongst its geological wonders.

The mill foundation remanants are scattered such as a large foundation where we found a group of many people camping on. Near the mill site I found a collapsed mine where wood pilons still pertrude from the sand. Just as along the canyon walls are also two ore cart tunnels.  The Lovell area is large so my only mistake is I did not make it here for a second trip. One of the best narrow slot canyons is located at Lovell Canyon called the Anniversary Narrows.  I did hike to the entrance to the narrows but nightfall set in so we did not get to see everything but I did get to hike in the wilderness so enjoy these breathtaking photos further below on this page.

When you hear the word grand canyon everybody has heard of it but when you mention Lovell Canyon very few are aware of its existence. Truthfully areas like Lovell Canyon and Gold Butte can compare with some of the best scenic sites in the country. Our site is to make others aware of its beauty but also to understand how important it is to fully preserve these sites. I want others to enjoy it like I did experience it the same. I sat on some rocks under the stars near the historical mill ruins smoking a joint breathing the fresh air and caught in a moment where time stood still.

I then I thought to myself I wonder if the campers felt the same way I did. They seemed to be laughing and having a great time but on mill ruins vehicles included. But more then often I have seen places like these eventually become dumping grounds which is why one of the reasons our site exist. We want others to party safely, adventure and have a great time. But if you do it please help preserve these locations leaving nothing but foot prints and taking nothing but photos. In Lovell Canyon's case take nothing but GEMS ha ha but hypothetically speaking yes that joke has truth in it. Lots of gemstones can be found in the wash/canyon littering the walls and floor.

As far as the ore cart tunnels at one time I was told by someone a pink ore cart could be found near the entrance. I was also told the two tunnels connected. I passed by the tunnels but decided to come back later so we could check out the mill ruins and do an EVP session. Unfortunately when we arrived back at the ore cart tunnels it was so dark we ended up climbing the muddy mountains totally losing the small entrances along Lovall Canyon. The ore cart tunnels are more safe however if you are new to the whole mining experience so I do reccommend it.  However when it comes to dealing with other mines in states like NV and CA I do reccommend caution as many mines that are safe stastistically speaking there are more that are twice as deadly.

As far as ghost well I am optomistic of the possibility afterall I did find a few possible miner graves. With that in mind what is more stranger then the unseen maybe the canyons ghost lights.

Francis M. Smith (aka the "Borax King")(1846-1931) was an American business
magnate and civic builder in Oakland, California. Smith Mountain in Death
Valley is named after him. In 1913, Smith, like his former partner, W.T.
Coleman, became "financially strapped" and had to turn over his assets to
creditors who refused to extend new loans. At the time, Smith's second wife
held an interest in a silver mine in Tonopah, Nevada. During his quest to
find a profitable way to convert extensive lake brines into borax, Smith
(the Borax King) OUTBID the new owners of his company for the rights for a
RICH borax discovery in Lovell Wash in the Muddy Mountains overlooking
Lake Mead. He called his operations there the ANNIVERSARY MINE, as the
claims were acquired on the anniversary of his marriage to his second wife.
His first wife (Mary) had died at age 55 in 1905. Smith went on to develop
the "Searles Lake deposits" in Califonia with capital he obtained from
profits of the Anniversary Mine in Nevada.

The "mind-bending" geology of the Muddy Mountains region
gives a telling glimpse into geologic time. About 300
million years ago, this area was sediment on the bottom
of a shallow sea. Today, the sea floor composes the
limestone peaks that rise nearly 6,000 ft. into the sky.
Scattered among these peaks are fossilized sand dunes
that have eroded into galleries and canyons, intricately
carved and painted in shades of red, orange and yellow.

With Valley of Fire State Park to the north and Lake
Mead to the east and south, the Muddy Mountains region
is in good company. This landscape on the north shore
of Lake Mead contains four wild areas that offer
stunning geology, a fragile desert ecosystem and a
rewarding opportunity to navigate a shadowy slot canyon,
and witness a Desert Bighorn sheep. Also, from
Anniversary Narrows Peak and points beyond, you can
sit on a rock and peer down into the Bowl of Fire.
