The Greater Union First Baptist Church of Deland was first organized in 1880 and its first services were held in a wood frame building over on Rich Avenue which was a half mile away where today the Deland City Hall Annex is located. The first Pastoral Leader was Rev. A.J. Brown and had 75 members. The section of town the church sat in was known as the Bermuda Bottom. The church was called a Union because it was the only Christian organization for Black people in Deland at that time. Since 1880 there have been over 30 ministers for the church which to my surprise is quite a lot since most churches keep ministers for years this one seems to have ministers who stay only a few years.

Under Rev. Killix which served from 1185 to 1895 the first revival was conducted and the church became a member of the Florida State General Baptist Convention. Then Rev. J.N. Stokes Sr  in the early 1890s the lot where the present church and buildings stand were purchased. Rev. J.M Trammel. took over after this and the first and only sanctuary was erected. Pews were purchased as well. Then under Rev. G. W. Carr's ministry the installation of the cornerstone was installed in 1929 Later under Rev. John W. Cole the sanctuary was renovated and 4 rooms were added to the west end of the building, a dining room and the first electric organ was purchased and installed. Also a new piano was purchased and installed and the name Greater was added to the former name Union Baptist from 1947 to 1957..

Then in 1961 Rev. C.S. Felder made some accomplishments by having a a pastoral office, screen in porch added to the old parsonage. A BBQ pit was built to enhance youth activities and a teenage commission was organized. A church baseball team also was formed and did stay active for years. In 1964 Rev. James A. Bing was the successor which e worked on making many spiritual and physical improvements to the church. The sanctuary was painted many times, the east side wall on the church was rebuilt, a sidewalk was installed and parking lot paved. New pulpit furniture was purchased, pew bibles, hymnals, offertory baskets, pew racks, book shelves and chairs. Draperies were installed in the Baptistery. A new organ and chimes were purchased. Also a church office and Pastor study were created and furnished. In 1969 a new parsonage was built. During that time Je'nah Louise Bing was born quite a rare seen for a Reverend to serve and have a child while serving the church.

After this many new things were formed and added from 1973 and on by Rev. Allen Weaver Jr. such as air conditioning, new pews with cushioned backs and seats, nursery room for toddlers, ordained 5 men to the Deacon Ministry, the Union Inspirational Choir, an education board for the church and much more. From this time on a few other children were born while reverends served the church. So the church remained quite active over the years and still is to this day.

So as you can see there is a lot of history to the church. This is perhaps why I chose to investigate it. You may not see alot of photos due to our first investigation interrupted by the police and some crazy man chasing me. But this church I believe is very haunted. I did capture a mist shot on my first photo taken here and that was enough to tell me something looms the grounds at night. But there are so many mysteries with the church as to why is there so many reverends that serve here over the last 129 years? Some of them only served one to 2 years before being succeeded. I do believe on a more psychic sense that many of the previous pastors haunt this church. We may conduct a second investigation here sometime. But the church in itself is very beautiful, large with lots of areas to explore so much remains to be seen and shared here.
