On the edge of death valley stands a town named Shoshone a place founded in the early part of the 1900s. I have since my time spent out west found an interest in death valley. I have not gone to the heart of it but little towns often have a huge history. Shoshone is a quaint town and when nightfalls the town is relatively quiet and dim. I know this from spending an hour driving around the town seeking out perhaps a grocer because I was hungy wanted a hot meal or something to quench my hunger from a days worth of hiking.

Like most towns along the eastern end of California this was another small mining railroad town that depended on its lode which carved out its path for the future. The town boast quite a few historical sites such as the general store, a restaurant from the 1930s, historic motel and railroading buildings. I found the town a bit dismal with its little dark airport and dark dirt roads. One area talked about more then anything in relation to Shoshone is a place called Dublin Gulch a wash where many cliff dwellings are present and its burials of many miners including senator Charles Brown.

When you enter the town of Shoshone out by one of the cliffs their was a mine perhaps borax since this type of mining was common in this area. The miners never had it easy as they worked in very dark spaces with the heat of the desert. If they did not work in a dark hole they worked strip mining the cliffs of many mountaineous locations.

Dublin Gulch is actually near an old volcano site which was mined some feel that the caves were created from volcanic ash which blanketed the area from an eruption in Yellowstone National Park thousands of years ago. I read once an article many months ago that their is no place in the world such as the cliff dwellings that sit within a very wide deep wash.

While I read that the caves are natural formations I read elsewhere that in the 1870s was an era were cliff dwellings were created as near Noonday some were found similar to the ones at the gulch. Another source states that the dwellings were carved by miners in the 1920s. These stone dwellings resembled something you would see out of a Flintstones cartoon. The caves as some call them had chimneys, doors, stone shelves, bedrooms, split levels, windows and even a one car garage. Each stone dwelling had a place for a stove to cook on while some had naturally built fire places to keep a miner warm on a chilly death valley winter night. While they called this small town ship bordering Dublin Gulch others called it a castle in clay. I found on my hike an outhouse so we had to assume that the locals at one time shared it.

Senator Brown at one time did own the caves never charging rent for those who wished to make them a home. I heard chief Tecopa stayed at one of the dwellings for a brief period of time also. Rumor has it the areas name was founded by a miner named Joe Volmer who came to the area from a place up in Butte Montana. Its amazing how state to state you will find similar names of roads, towns, suburbs and historic sites.

Another well known name that comes up is Henry Ashford who had a mill the Ashford brothers lived in the dwelling. Their are rumored to be 55 burials in the wash with half of them being unmarked. I am not sure I ever seen a cemetery that resides in a wash considering rain could wash away grave markers in a situation where flooding is involved. Another name that might ring a bell is Shorty Harris who also resided here.

If you happen to visit this town their is a very famous cafe called the Crowbar Cafe along with the local museum which is now overseeing the preservation of the cliff dwellings. At one time the doors to the dwellings remained unlocked but over the years sadly vandals have defaced them. I actually found a dwelling a mile from the gulch that we set up base camp at. From my experience I enjoyed the soft sandy flooring inside of them however believe it or not some dwellings had hardwood floors. On each side of the gulch their are roughly 5 dwellings while further into it one might find a magazine storage site. The remoteness of the area made it safer to store such things here for safety reasons.

The last dwelling that was inhabited was 1970 since then the residences in the gulch have been long forgotten. The tourist passing through this town keep it alive as many visit the gulch. Although I will tell you right now I found the place to have strange feelings of being watched....hearing noises....and felt as if nobody has ever left these dwellings despite their condition today.

A story that stands out about the first burial in the cemetery which is found at the entrance to the gulch is that of Ralph Modine a 4 year old child. This child died in a tragic fire in 1924. His death would bring on the Shoshone Cemetery. Its amazing how many of the graves have fresh flowers on them. I mean for every burial within this location has a tale and all them tales are connected to what this gulch symbolized. If you visit the museum they will give you a tour or at least more information if you want to see the location.

-Shoshone, Californiahttp://digital-desert.com/shoshone-ca/
In a shady grove of mesquite known as Metbury spring, the town of Shoshone was founded in 1910 by Ralph Jacobus "Dad" Fairbanks, a Death Valley prospector, freighter and entrepenuer interested in establishing businesses along the station stop of the Tonopah & Tidewater Railroad.

Charles "Charlie" Brown, one time sheriff of Greenwater, married Stella Fairbanks in 1910 and became Dad Fairbanks' son-in-law. In 1920 Charlie and Stella, after moving around quite a bit, returned to Shoshone and bought into a partnership with Dad on the town.

The little town developed and expanded. Dad saw potential inBaker and moved on in 1927. Charlie became a California state senator and in 1938, town management was turned over to Charlie's son, Charles. Through the years and following successions the little town remains in family hands.
