Chloride AZ is a semi ghost town today more of a tourist attraction. Chloride for PGS would be part of a series which would take us to a couple other ghost towns in the Cerbat Mountain range. The town was built in the early 1860's many individuals did not even want to live here due to violent Indian raids and harsh terrain. It was only till the later 1800's where Chloride became a major town full of many businesses and trades. Chloride was a mining town known for its Silver Chloride although Lead, Zinc, Copper, Vanadium, Gold, Silver and Molybdenum were all discovered here. The town itself is said to boast the oldest church and oldest post office in the state of AZ. Amongst the town ruins are historic sites, pots n pans hanging from the trees, old fire trucks, gas pumps, wagons and many other interesting artifacts of history. The soldiers of Fort Mojave were actually supposed to retain law and order within the town however their greed took over thus in the early days of the town gun fights ensued as well as criminal activity between the white man and native Americans. The old cemetery that greets the town has an Indian chief buried here and is divided between pioneers and actual veterans. At one time this town boasted 2000 residents but a series of fires would eventually end this towns hayday not to mention that the major mining was ended in 1944 just after WWII. This could have been due to the fact that the price extract ore inflated and man power was scare as most of the miners joined the service. At one time the Santa Fe Railroad came into town from 1898 to about 1935 this provided allot of growth within the town however today their are no trains only the old station as a reminder of what once was. For us this was more then a paranormal jaunt it was an exploration into one of the greatest all time ghost towns in Arizona. When walking around the town enthusiast can still visit the old two room jail, bank vault, post office, historic church and railroad station all still standing. Their are many models of the town and a few shops where you can buy some pretty cool Chloride goods such as homemade blankets....hats.....key chains.....minerals etc. Today their are over 200 residents in Chloride some have taken up residence in some of the historical homes which are scattered throughout town. Other sites would include old town, water tower and an older park if your into going on the swings or teetertotter like we did. Just outside the town their is a series of dirt roads which will take you past mine and mill ruins beyond that are a location called the Murals. This site also has some ancient petroglyphs so you can see why the Native American people were so protective when early settlers arrived here as the site is sacred. The murals were painted in the 1960's by Roy Purcell who is a well known artist in the southwest. The murals are very colorful some are Egyptian while others depict the town of Chloride all true masterpieces. I heard back in the day it was common to get stoned back here and paint on the rocks. From what I read Roy Purcell did return to touch up the murals so the color remains as vibrant today as it did almost 40 years. This by no means was a small town as it had a blacksmith, two saloons, cafeterias, restaurant, 75 plus mines, stage coach line called Butterfield, brewery, general store and many other sites. Prior to the church being built services were held in a Pullman Railroad Car where Sunday school could be held and was a chapel. Eventually two churches would form however one burned down and the other one still stands which is made out of river rock and stucco. Many strange stories are to be passed around this location for generations however the most ironic or oddest story is about a naval officer who had bad dreams about drowning. He realized maybe the NAVY was not for him so he came to Chloride built a house out of rock near town and got into mining. He accidentally slipped one day falling down a shaft drowning to death. The house was resold where the taxes were still due so they opened up a house of soiled doves. Today the house is vacant I did not have a chance to visit it but nonetheless their is an eeriness which surrounds the home according to some of the locals. Chloride is not only known for its Fortean events but over the years numerous folks have reported strange UFO activity out here. Just as locals in the town have seen balls of light moving along the hillside here. I also read about a vaporous trail and figure seen in a vacant lot where once a movie theater stood. When they bulldozer began to haul the concrete foundation out of here. It is said when the concrete was moved around moaning sounds were heard. The apparition seemed to emanating from the concrete for weeks on where the machine was left at after the shifting of concrete slabs. Today the town has been reborn thanks to tourism which allows others to walk around freely at the various sites. The town is rather bustling unlike most of the ghost towns we tour and visit. Its a place full of history around every turn no matter what street you walk down making this a wonderful urban exploration. The people around town are very friendly as some waved to me as I walked down some of the dirt roads. Some movies filmed in Chloride range from old westerns to even scif-fi's such like Universal Soldier. During its heyday, there were more than 75 mines in operation, and the population reached 2,000 in 1920. Today, there are still a few mines in operation, but Chloride looks elsewhere for prosperity. has been served by both stage coaches and trains during its colorful
history. The Chloride Post Office, also established in 1862, is the
oldest continuously operating post office in the state of Arizona. The
Chloride Historical Society maintains several old buildings including
the Old Jail and the Playhouse. Every 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month
