The Assumption Catholic Church is not in the heart of downtown Buffalo but still remains to be one of the more majestic looking churches with its 2 giant bell towers, school, sanctuary, and chapel. There is not as much history that goes with this church perhaps its because it is not as old as some of the more recent churches we investigated. However it all started in 1882 when polish immigrant moved to the Black Rock area of Buffalo. They wanted to start a church or have some area they could have baptisms and weddings at.

In 1888 the cornerstone was laid for the church and in 1989 a small structure was complete which for 3 years would have 800 baptisms and 136 weddings take place. Then Assumptions Father Theophil Kozlowski in 1903 resigned when this church was formed into Black Rock School and on the grounds a new basement would be laid for a much larger church. Father Ladislaus Hordyc worked hard till 1914 when the corner stone was laid by Bishop Charles Colton. So for 11 years the Eagle Parishioners worked hard removing debris, constructing, and bringing in materials used to build this Romanesque structure with 2 bell towers that were very European in style. The basement today houses many different events such as Bingo which Mark and I watched as we peered into the windows.

This church was also made fire proof making it one of the first of its kind. It had over 50 stained glass windows and all the lower ones were imported from Europe which tell the story of Christ and his saints. The church also contains 3 giant rose windows which allow sunlight to pass threw this illuminates the lower and upper windows in the sanctuary. When the church was complete it could seat well over 1500 parishioners.

By 1940 roughly 1900 families and 900 students were registered at the black rock school which was staffed by 15 Felician Sisters. In 1961 Father Ladislaus Breiski was succeeded by Monsignor Maximillian T. Bogacki.  He modernized the church had air conditioning installed, redecorated the sanctuary, many liturgical symbols were added such as the 5 scenes of the Virgin Mary in the Scraffto. Then a new pastor named Henry S. Kawalec was appointed in 1974 and  by 1987 he had the interior painted a new lighting system and all the pews upholstered.

In 1991 Monsignor Kawalec Died and a new pastor was appointed by the name Daniel J. Myszka he replaced the main alter which was consecrated in 1995 by Bishop Edward D. Head. Eventually Myszka retired and a new pastor took his place. Today the church has over 1100 catholic members. There is a chapel, the school still stands, and bingo takes places frequently. The front steps were restored along with the dome on one of the bell towers which was destroyed and fell off in a storm. Many more renovations are going to be done to the church such as the brick work and roofs of this 84 year old structure.

Today from a fairly good distance you can see the 2 giant bell towers which are well over 150 feet in height. Perhaps that is my fascination with this structure day dreaming of what it would be like to climb the top of them towers. But some things are great to day dream about. After all when I was a child my father would take me to this church's grounds to play for hours at the playground. As a child I would just look up at the towers and get dizzy. Such memories and to be able to bring a ghostly story to the world about this place even is a bigger treat. Naturally this is haunted one of the first police parishes was this church along with the Black Rock School. Did anyone die in the last century building this place? I have no idea but over the years many who have served and helped this church prosper have passed. Like any old church this one has a few ghost stories of its own. So take a walk with us and see what we see.
